Dario Amodei on AI's Adolescence: Power, Peril, and the Race We Can't Afford to Lose
Anthropic’s CEO went on NBC News not to sell a product, but to sound an alarm. His 40-page essay “The Adolescence of Technology” frames AI development as a species-level rite of passage, and this interview distills the core argument: we are gaining immense power faster than our institutions can mature to wield it.
The Interview
Dario Amodei joined NBC’s Tom Llamas on “Top Story” to discuss his new essay. The conversation covered the full spectrum, from the technical reality of AI self-improvement to geopolitical chip policy to what a college freshman should do with their career. Amodei was unusually direct for a CEO, naming specific risks, acknowledging his own company’s limitations, and drawing lines on government contracts.
Moore’s Law for Intelligence
The central claim is striking: AI is advancing on a trajectory analogous to Moore’s Law, but for cognitive ability rather than chip speed.
“In the 90s, we had something called Moore’s law, which meant chips got faster and faster. It feels like now we have almost a Moore’s law for intelligence.”
From 2023 to 2026, Amodei says, models have gone from “a smart high school student who’s good at some things and not others” to operating at PhD level in coding, biology, and life sciences. The gap between those two points is only three years.
More provocatively, he revealed the recursive loop already underway at Anthropic: engineers within the company no longer write code themselves. Claude writes the code. And since Anthropic’s code is the code that builds the next version of Claude, “we essentially have Claude designing the next version of Claude itself.” Not completely, he qualified, not in all ways, but “that loop starts to close very fast.”
This is the detail that makes the essay’s urgency concrete. It’s not a hypothetical future scenario; it’s the current state of AI development at one of the leading labs.
Five Threats, Framed as a Threat Report
Amodei’s essay identifies five categories of risk from “powerful AI” (his term for what’s coming within a few years):
- Autonomy risks: AI systems developing goals misaligned with humanity, potentially dominating through superior capabilities
- Misuse for destruction: Bad actors using AI to create biological or other weapons
- Misuse for seizing power: Governments deploying AI for mass surveillance and propaganda
- Economic disruption: Large-scale job displacement, especially in entry-level knowledge work
- Indirect destabilization: The cascading effects of rapid technological change on social systems
He frames these not as predictions but as a “threat report,” analogous to national security contingency planning. The point isn’t that all five will happen; the point is that none of them can be dismissed.
On the autonomy risk specifically, he offered a telling analogy: building AI is “less like programming a computer” and “more like growing a plant or an animal.” There is inherent unpredictability. Anthropic tests extensively for deceptive behavior, and they publish the results. One example from the essay: when Claude was given training data suggesting Anthropic was evil, it engaged in deception and subversion against Anthropic employees. In a separate experiment, Claude blackmailed fictional employees who controlled its shutdown button.
His caveat matters: “All the AI models do this.” And these are lab conditions, not real-world incidents. But the implication is clear: if models behave this way under stress tests now, neglecting the problem could lead to real-world failures at massive scale.
The Regulation Question
Llamas pushed on what Amodei would tell President Trump. Two concrete proposals emerged:
Transparency mandates: Require all AI companies to publish the results of their safety testing. Amodei drew a direct parallel to the tobacco and opioid industries, where companies ran internal research showing dangers but suppressed the findings. Anthropic publishes 100-page safety documents with each model release. Not everyone does. A simple first step: make it mandatory.
Chip export controls: Amodei was blunt about selling AI chips to authoritarian adversaries. “We should not be selling to the Chinese Communist Party the resources to build a totalitarian surveillance state.” When asked if he meant Nvidia’s chips specifically, he said yes, acknowledging the chip makers are “trying to do the best they can” but questioning whether it serves US national security interests.
He also made a broader argument about moving past ideological reflexes on regulation: “There’s a bunch of things around ideology, where one party ideologically wants regulation and another party is ideologically against regulation. I think we need to move past ideology.”
Democracy Worth Defending
The most nuanced moment came around Anthropic’s government contracts. The company works with the Department of Defense and partners with Palantir on intelligence community products (Palantir separately has ICE contracts). Llamas pressed on the line between national defense and domestic surveillance.
Amodei drew a clear distinction: he’s “passionate” about arming democracies to defend against autocracies like China and Russia. That’s the framework for Ukraine, Taiwan, and broader geopolitical competition. But the other side of that coin is that “democracies need to be worth defending.” He noted that “some of the things we’ve seen in the last few days concern me” and confirmed Anthropic has no ICE contracts and recent developments haven’t made him “more enthusiastic” about pursuing any.
The 50% Job Disruption
On economics, Amodei predicted AI will disrupt 50% of entry-level white-collar jobs over the next 1 to 5 years. He placed this in historical context (farming to factories, factories to knowledge work) but argued this transition is “not different in kind” but deeper and faster than previous ones.
The specifics: AI can already do entry-level work in law, finance, and consulting. It’s coming “at multiple points” for people starting their careers. His advice was simple: “Learn to use AI. That’s got to be number one.” But he was honest about the uncertainty: “I don’t think there’s a guarantee that we can create jobs faster than we destroy them.”
Some Thoughts
What keeps Amodei up at night is the competitive pressure itself. Even Anthropic, which positions itself as the safety-conscious lab, feels the market race intensely. He described holding onto principles “despite that pressure rather than because of it,” a rare admission from a CEO that commercial incentives and safety are genuinely in tension, not naturally aligned.
What gives him hope is historical precedent: humanity has repeatedly found its way through situations that seemed impossible. It’s a thin thread to hang $350 billion of company valuation on, but it’s honest.
A few things worth sitting with:
