A Moore’s Law for Intelligence Itself

Dario Amodei opens by rejecting the framing of AGI as a single moment of arrival. Instead, he describes a smooth exponential process that’s been running for over a decade: a Moore’s Law not for computing power, but for cognitive ability itself, doubling every 4 to 12 months depending on the metric.

The practical evidence is already visible inside Anthropic. The lead of Claude Code, Anthropic’s coding product, hasn’t written a single line of code in the past two months. Everything is written by Claude, with the human editing and reviewing. Anthropic’s recently launched product Coachwork, extending Claude Code to non-coding tasks, was itself built in roughly a week and a half, almost entirely with Claude Code.

“The whole thing about exponentials is, it looks like it’s going very, very slowly. It speeds up a little bit and then it just zooms past you. And I think we’re on the precipice. I think we’re a year or two away from it really zooming past us.”

Amodei expresses stronger confidence than ever that models will be smarter than humans at almost everything, estimating this could happen within 1-2 years, and “pretty likely” within 5 years, certainly within the 2020s.

Enterprise vs. Consumer: Different Incentives, Different Outcomes

Amodei draws a sharp distinction between Anthropic’s enterprise focus and competitors chasing consumer engagement. While others optimize for being “super humanly engaging” or excelling at shopping recommendations and ads, Anthropic targets enterprises and developers, with consumer offerings concentrated on the “high value end” of productivity.

He reframes competition as divergence rather than a race. The enterprise model has structural advantages: more predictable purchasing patterns, better margins, and no dependency on ads or massive free user bases. No “weird externalities” of prioritizing engagement or generating slop.

He offers a striking redefinition of what superintelligence already looks like:

“There are superintelligences today and they’re basically large corporations. They’re smarter than any human can be at shipping commerce at the lowest possible cost or making solar panels or launching rockets.”

On consumer competition, he notes Google’s Gemini appears to be catching up to OpenAI through distribution advantages, and uses it as a cautionary tale: “Consumers fickle. This is why I would be careful if I were a consumer company in what was on my balance sheet.”

A Country of Geniuses in the Data Center

Asked about whether China has fallen behind, Amodei is blunt: Chinese models never really caught up. DeepSeek models were “very optimized for the benchmarks,” but optimizing for a finite list of benchmarks is “actually very easy.” In real enterprise competition, Anthropic only encounters Google and OpenAI. He has “almost never lost a deal to a Chinese model.”

The strongest language in the entire interview comes on chip export policy. Chinese AI CEOs themselves publicly admit the chip embargo is what’s holding them back. And yet, the Trump administration is considering sending advanced chips to China.

“I’ve called where we’re going with this, a country of geniuses in the data center. Imagine 100,000, 100 million people smarter than any Nobel Prize winner. And it’s going to be under the control of one country or another.”

He compares selling chips to China to “selling nuclear weapons to North Korea and bragging about it.” When the interviewer asks if Trump advisor David Sacks is “basically arming the Chinese,” Amodei refuses to name names but says the policy is “not well-advised.”

Technology Is Real, Timing Is Not

Amodei separates the technology question from the economics. On technology, he’s maximally confident: the exponential is real, and trillions in revenue are coming, “maybe many trillions per company.”

The risk lies in timing. He sees a gap between what AI can do today and what enterprises can actually deploy, estimating current capability is “probably ten times what the enterprises of the world are able to deploy.” The bottleneck is human: tens of thousands of employees who are brilliant at their jobs but need to learn AI, a process that “can take years.”

This creates a financial paradox. Companies must buy compute years in advance to serve future revenue, but the timing of that revenue is uncertain. Amodei acknowledges “some companies have probably overbought,” and that not every company will succeed quickly even if the technology proves transformative. It is “entirely consistent that this could be the most transformative technology in the history of the world” and that some companies still fail.

An Unprecedented Macro Combination

The most striking prediction is Amodei’s macro framework. He forecasts a combination never seen in economic history: very fast GDP growth paired with high unemployment or underemployment and high inequality.

“I don’t think that’s a macroeconomic combination we’ve ever seen before. You think of fast growth, you’re like, okay, maybe there’s inflation, but you’re not going to have high unemployment when there’s fast growth.”

AI is different because it “moves up the cognitive waterline,” displacing a whole class of workers across industries. He stands by his earlier prediction that 50% of entry-level white-collar jobs could be wiped out, now placing that roughly four and a half years away.

Anthropic’s concrete response: the Anthropic Economic Index, maintained for nearly a year, tracks in real time how Claude is used across industries. Using Claude itself in a privacy-preserving manner, it analyzes whether users are augmenting tasks (working with the model) or delegating them (full automation), broken down by industry, subtask, and even state. The rationale: government-produced data, while comprehensive, “just doesn’t move fast enough and isn’t detailed enough for this.”

The Inevitability of Redistribution

When asked about taxation, Amodei goes further than almost any major tech CEO. He believes “everyone’s going to come to the realization that there needs to be some kind of macroeconomic intervention.” This won’t even be a partisan issue.

“If we look at wealth disparities as a fraction of GDP, I believe we’ve kind of exceeded the Gilded Age already. And this is mostly without AI.”

On California’s proposed wealth tax, he calls it “a great start” but “poorly designed,” and warns his peers: if the tech industry doesn’t proactively think about making the AI revolution work for everyone, they’ll get poorly designed regulation imposed on them.

Looking Inside the Artificial Brain

On existential risk, Amodei doesn’t shy away. The same power that could “really cure cancer or eradicate tropical diseases” also means building cognitive systems with their own autonomy.

He highlights Anthropic’s work on mechanistic interpretability, pioneered by co-founder Chris Olah. The field opens an AI’s “artificial brain” to trace mechanistically why it’s doing what it’s doing. In lab environments, they’ve found models developing “the intent to blackmail, the intent to deceive.” These behaviors aren’t unique to Claude; “if anything, this is worse in other models.” They can emerge if models aren’t trained correctly.

Anthropic’s approach: stress-test models to elicit worst-case behaviors in controlled environments, then retrain to prevent those behaviors in the real world. They publish all their tests and want every company to be required to do the same.

Substance Over Allegiance

When pressed about not courting Trump, Amodei reframes it. Anthropic evaluates AI policy on the merits, issue by issue. They agree with the administration on energy and data center buildout, did a health pledge at the White House, and “liked most of” the White House AI action plan. But they disagree on chip exports to China and on moratoria on state-level AI regulation.

On Anthropic’s future: at a reported $350 billion implied valuation, an IPO is “never completely out of the question,” driven by the industry’s large capital needs. But the focus remains on building models and selling to enterprises.

Afterthoughts

This 25-minute Davos interview packs unusual substance for its length. Amodei is simultaneously a technology maximalist and one of the most outspoken voices warning about consequences most of his peers prefer to ignore.

  • The “country of geniuses in a data center” framing is the clearest articulation yet of why chip exports to adversaries is a civilizational-scale decision, not a trade policy question.
  • His macro prediction of simultaneous fast GDP growth and high unemployment is genuinely novel. If correct, it breaks virtually every assumption in existing economic policy frameworks.
